The 12 EDT lessons.
EDT is twelve one-hour lessons. One-to-one with an RSA-approved ADI, in a dual-control car. The syllabus is set by the Road Safety Authority. Every learner does the same twelve.
Lesson 1 first, always. Then 2 through 8 in whatever order fits your week. Lessons 9 to 12 open up once 2 to 8 are logged on the RSA system. Lesson 12 has to happen after dark. That's the rule, not a preference.
Twelve hours in the car, plus Sponsor practice between sessions. The logbook gets stamped at the end of each lesson and uploaded to the RSA system. When all twelve certificates show up on your record, you can apply for the test.
Car Controls and Safety Checks
Lesson 1 covers the pre-drive checks, the cockpit drill, the clutch bite point, and the first fifty metres of moving the car.
Correct Positioning
Lesson 2 covers where the car belongs in the lane, how far back to sit, and how to turn without cutting the corner.
Changing Direction
Lesson 3 covers the MSMM observation routine that the driving test marks on every turn, every lane change, and every move-off.
Progression Management
Lesson 4 covers reading speed limits, matching pace to conditions, stopping distances, and the gear-speed relationship the driving test will check.
Positioning, More Complex Situations
Lesson 5 covers three-point turns, reversing around a corner, parallel parking, and the observation script that keeps all of them safe.
Anticipation and Reaction
Lesson 6 covers hazard perception, the scanning pattern, reading other road users, and responding to problems before they become emergencies.
Sharing the Road
Lesson 7 is the hour where the car stops being the centre of attention and the road opens up to everyone else on it.
Driving Safely Through Traffic
Lesson 8 is the integration test: everything the first seven lessons taught you, in dense traffic, under time pressure.
Changing Direction at Volume
Lesson 9 takes the observation routine from Lesson 3 and puts it under the pressure of Dublin's most confusing junctions.
Speed Management
Learners can't drive on motorways in Ireland, so Lesson 10 is the theory of higher-speed driving paired with in-car dual carriageway practice.
Driving Calmly
Lesson 11 covers the conditions that make a driver unfit and the skills for staying calm when the road gets frustrating.
Night Driving
Lesson 12 is the only EDT hour with a fixed timing rule, the final lesson, and the one the RSA kept to the end on purpose.
Lesson 1 is where it starts.
